Spring in Sioux Falls is short and unpredictable. The lawns that look the best in July are the ones that got the right attention in March and April.

Start with a deep cleanup: rake out matted grass, pull sticks, and clear last fall's leaves out of the beds. Compacted thatch is the #1 reason new grass struggles in May.

Next, get a pre-emergent down before soil temperatures hit 55°F. Miss that window and crabgrass wins the rest of the year.

Aerate if your lawn feels hard underfoot. Overseed thin spots while soil is still cool. Fertilize once you see consistent growth — usually mid-April here.

Finally, sharpen the mower blade. A dull blade tears grass and invites disease. That single change makes more difference than people think.
